Plant news - USA
I returned from a two week holiday last Thursday the 25th May. The holiday took in Toronto, Canada, New York City, Delaware and Niagara Falls. I was extremely impressed with the layout and colourful gardens in suburban Whiteplains, Yonkers in New York. More details in next post.A day trip to Wilmington in Delaware (about 120 miles south of NYC) also yielded scenic views of open countryside and stunning large gardens as well as massive public parks. It is true what they say - in America everything is designed and built on a larger scale. Will expand on this in the next post.
Here is information about two excellent websites which are specifically related to garden or landscape design. Paul Dyer is an English garden designer who designs and builds gardens worldwide. His website is an excellent source of inspiration: http://garden-design.tv/
David Beaulieu is an American DIY and garden design enthusiast. You have the option of signing up for his landscape design newsletter:

Recently someone asked if a large phormium (New Zealand Flax) plant could be pruned back. The advice given in the books suggests that if this plant overcrowds a small garden the best option is to remove the plant altogether. Alternatively buy a dwarf phormium - the one with the wine red leaves Phormium 'Sundowner' & plant this instead. Phormiums can be pruned & now is the best time to do this job.
The following plant website gives some useful information about phormiums & other plants: http://backyardgardener.com/
