Chinese Poetry

Chinese poetry is very inspiring especially when it comes to describing human emotions and nature. Take a look at the following Chinese poems:

Cold Mountain by Han Shan

You have seen the blossoms among the leaves;
tell me, how long will they stay?
Today they tremble before the hand that picks them;
tomorrow they wait someone's garden broom.
Wonderful is the bright heart of youth,
but with the years it grows old.
Is the world not like these flowers?
Ruddy faces, how can they last?

The Eight Formations

Your achievements overshadowed
any in the Three Kingdoms;
most famous of all was your design
for the Eight Formations.

Against the river’s surge,
they stand solid, immovable,
a monument to your lasting regret
at failing to swallow up Wu.

(translated by David Lunde)

Okay these are Chinese poems which have been translated into English so perhaps the meaning is lost a little by the translation, however I still think they are nice, soothing poems...

A good friend of mine gave me the loan of a volume of Chinese poetry called: Chinese Poems by Arthur Waley (Unwin Books, 1968). That's several weeks ago now and I am enjoying the soothing words of these great Chinese poets. All I can say is check out his new WordPress Blog: sillyoldtwit and you will discover that he has a lot of interesting subjects up for discussion...
