Increase vegetable yield:
Increase the yield of your vegetables by using the 'cut & run' method. Don't cut the leaves with a knife. Instead catch the end of a leaf & pull downwards. This method will ensure the growth of new replacement leaves. Using this method it is possible to get salad lettuce to continue cropping well into November.
Cucumber, tomatoe & passion flower will have curled leaves & may also drop leaves due to a sudden fluctuation in temperature. A west-facing wall is not good for growing passion flower. Passion flower grows best on a south-west or south facing wall. If passion flower is growing on a west facing wall - during cold spells protect the plant with horticultural fleece.
Vegetable seed sowing:
Sow the seed of vegetables at 2 to 3 week intervals. This method avoids a glut of any one salad crop, particularly lettuce which grows extremely vigorously. Try to create raised beds for growing your vegetables. Raised beds have the following advantages:
- Less wasted space
- More intensive cultivation
- Never become compacted because the soil is not trodden when planting or harvesting
- Don't over-fill the beds with soil. Leave at least 2 inches below the top of the boards for adding a compost mulch
