February in Your Garden
Life returns to the garden again in February; during the brighter days of this month the sap begins to rise within all plants. It's also a month where the gardener can expect the four seasons to occur during the course of a single day. During mild spells lawns continue to grow. So now is the time to give your lawn the first cut of the year. However, if the weather is frosty or the ground waterlogged don't mow the lawn - wait until milder and drier conditions.Sow broad beans and peas from mid-late February. They can be sown directly into the ground which has already been dug and prepared. Broad beans and peas will be ready for harvesting in early summer.
Dahlias are available in garden centres now.
Witch hazel - it's still a good time to plant this plant. At the garden centre or nursery you can select a variety of flowers so you know you're getting the one you want.
Potatoes - start them off now. Look for new varieties which are blight resistant. These are worth a try if you live in an area particularly prone to blight.
Roses - there's still time to prune roses. Traditionally in Ireland this garden job is done before St. Patrick's Day. Also mulch the rose bed after pruning with well rotted farm yard manure which will help to suppress weeds and contribute valuable nutrients to the plants.

You just reminded me that I have to prune my fruit trees! But as for peas, still too much snow in Ottawa. Nice reading about a garden uncovered in white.
